An official statement from the University of Bamenda (UBa) has clarified that Prof. Mbufong Paul Kuban, was targeted and assassinated and not killed by a stray bullet, as it might be the case.
Painting the picture of the scenario Friday, October 26, 2018, in a press release signed by Prof. Suh Cheo Emmanuel, the deputy vice chancellor, of the university, it was revealed that the gruesome act, carried-out by some unidentified assailants, at about 11 a.m, Thursday, October 25, 2018, unfolded as Prof. Mbufong was on his way to work.
Addressing the situation on behalf of the vice chancellor, he pointed out that Prof. Mbufong, a professor of linguistics and director of administrative affairs at UBa was targeted and assassinated and not hit by a stray bullet as many thought.
He echoed that he was actually chased and eventually killed, where he sought refuge behind the Tubah council.
While extending their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, he used the briefing to reassure the staff and students of the University of Bamenda to remain calm as necessary dispositions are in place to ensure that the campus remains secured.
An independent source recounted to The Voice that the don was mistakenly shot during a fierce gun-battle that ensued that fateful day between the military and pro-independent fighters around the council.
As spotted on the picture of the deceased, after the incident, he had bullet wounds on his head and chest and was seen with blood stains all over his white shirt.
Unconfirmed reports has it that Prof. Mbufong died at the spot of the incident while other sources said he gave up the ghost few minutes after he was rushed to the Bamenda regional hospital.
Tubah subdivision in Mezam division in the northwest shares boundary with Belo subdivision in Boyo which in recent months have witnessed serious gun exchanges from regular soldiers and the pro-independent fighters, living the population under unbearable hardship and suffering.
Most of the locals have fled into the bushes while some have ran to Bamenda and other neighboring areas.
