Mali: 37 years old Woman Appointed Secretary-General At The Presidency Of the Republic

The former Malian Minister of Digital Economy and Prospective joins the first circle of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

The former Minister of the Digital Economy and Prospective is now the Secretary General of the Presidency. “This appointment was a big surprise. It’s a way for the president to tighten his first circle, ”said Baba Dakono, executive secretary of the Citizen’s Observatory on Governance and Security in Mali.

Her appointment comes after a large demonstration last Friday to denounce corruption and the security crisis. Political parties and civil society organizations have also called for the resignation of the president.

In the general secretariat of the presidency, Kamissa Camara replaces Moustapha Ben Barka, who is the nephew of president Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta (IBK), who has once been the vice-president of the West African Development Bank since February.

In 2018, Kamissa Camara was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs and appointment that created shock waves. At 35, the young woman succeeded a local heavyweight in Mali’s politics: Tiéman Hubert Coulibaly, president of the Union for Democracy and Development (UDD) party.

Kamissa Camara is a Holder of Malian, French and American nationalities, she has managed, over time, to find her place in government.

Kamissa Camara embodies the generation of “repats” (for “repatriates”), these are young people from the diaspora who have resettled back on the continent after having spent their whole life abroad.

Less exposed in the media, she nevertheless remained active. From the start of the Covid-19 epidemic, she put technology at the service of the response.
