In what many are describing as new laws meant to crackdown on legal immigration, even permanent residents with green cards can now be deported from the United States for making simple mistakes on their tax returns forms.
The new laws are going into effect this year, 2020, as Americans prepare to vote to elect their next president in a divided country.
President Donald Trump, a Republican, has vowed to crackdown on illegal immigration, but now, even legal immigrants with a green card, have realized they are not immune from the current climate of fear and blame games.
Here are five USCIS changes that will impact legal immigrants in the U.S. in 2020
▪ Moving to another country with the intention of living there permanently.
▪ Staying abroad for a prolonged period, without proof that the trip is for a short-term visit. The green card is automatically canceled if the trips abroad last more than one year, or if the immigrants take up residence in another country. In either case, USCIS recommends applying for permission to reenter the United States.
▪ Failing to declare income to the Internal Revenue Service and state income tax authorities.
▪ Declaring “nonimmigrant” status on U.S. tax returns.
▪ Failing to register for the U.S. military’s Selective Service System, if the immigrants are males between the ages of 18 and 25.
