How on earth can we accept this in a Bilingual Country. Our leaders should really wake up from sleep. We cannot claim to be united whilst at the same marginalizing English language speakers in Cameroon. This shows complete disregard and disdain to Southern Cameroonians.
A keen observer of the CAMEROON political landscape and anyone following the Anglophone crisis who has an “inkling” of good faith as to its origin, this “regionalisation” of norms, standards, and regulatory authorities was one of the key paths to be investigated, to understand what frustrated Anglophones the most.
So, we create laws, Commissions, and the like to lol make Cameroon “nationally” bilingual within its borders. What purpose do they serve in a context where an increasing number of our norms, standards, regulatory texts, regulatory institutions, and even sub-regional Courts fall outside the remit of this “national” bilingualism ?
Yet three years after a lot of protest, of explanatory papers, and even of bloodshed, a law gets passed on official bilingualism in December 2019, and says not a word about how Cameroon interfaces with these mono-lingual subregional bodies that fail to apply its national bilingualism.
I am sure Cameroon will now start a spirited defence of its CAMPOST file, by arguing that per the revised CEMAC treaty, that institution is now quadrilingual, with I believe English, French, Arabic, and maybe Portuguese or Spanish as official languages. But is that revised CEMAC treaty binding on BEAC? Is it on COBAC? And if so, how long before they implement that in practice ?
