Protest Poetry: We Shall Overcome

We shall overcome
By undergoing what we have undergone for fifty eight years and counting
Yes! Because of the indirect rule that was heaped upon us

And then abandoned in the auction house of expedience
Devoid of research and due diligence
As he presented the report – on their behalf
With the pride of the Union Jack
Covering the shame of criminal negligence and betrayal
Yes again!! Because of the whip of forced labor
Framed in the tough love hypocrisy of a nascent nursery
That will eventually eat up even their very kind.

We shall overcome
By coming through this dark alley of self-doubt and self-hate
That was to blossom from the seeds planted at the metropole
By the farmers and grazers of you know who

And the share croppers and collaborators
Whose cursed blood flows in our veins – some veins?
Oh yes! By coming through the door of no return
That was closed on our backs in 1984
With the unilateral arrogance and impunity of Gaullist ignorance- or should we say effrontery
Ringing in our ears with the familiar boundless echo
That is buried in the ocean of our conscience
You know we will come through
By knocking down the iron walls of nobodiness built around us
By tearing down the bullet proof glass houses in which we were caged
And from which we could regret the fatalities of our history
From the lavish ebullience of their kleptomania
Shinning in our miragic eyes like the blinding blare of akadabra
By fighting with our emaciated bodies as if our last breathe depended on it
By struggling with the demons that they nurtured in us
As we fought in their glass cages
Between graphi and sawa

While they watched from their little golden windows of greed and graft
By killing and spilling the blood of this monster – and all their monsters
In the market place of our commonality
On the altars of our spiritual garment of Ambazonia
And letting our anger and our bitterness flow endless
In the gutters of their streets from which we were banished
And their wells from which we could not drink
And their playgrounds on which we could not play
In their hospitals on whose doorsteps who died in quest
In their schools to which we could never accede
Talk less of graduating to keep the peace
And sway the sword of justice
Or even teach our kids much less their own
Yes, let it fill their home
Like the catholic punishment for stealing the sacrament of communion.

We shall overcome by controlling the very urge that was our scourge
Confident in the ultimate knowledge that merit is the cleric
That vision is the mission to the space that we will make for ourselves
That accountability is to self-health as it is to national wealth
That one man or woman cannot be God
Lest he or she fails to manifest themselves in all the multiplicity of splendor
That a village is not a tribe
And a tribe is not a nation
Because a nation is all of a village and a tribe and more
This way we in Ambazonia will overcome
By eliminating the urge of one man rule
And go beyond the rigidity of three equal arms of government

And thread the futuristic frontier of adopting and accepting the Press
And the opposition as the real measures of our oath
And commitment to each other
And to the people of Ambazonia.

We shall overcome
Because we are overpowering all our shortcomings
And sticking together like one son and daughter
As one man and woman united in the spirit of the struggle
That is grounded in truth and justice
As preached as our own very Deacon.

We shall overcome
Because we are over correcting the timidness of dreaming beyond the expanse of our freedom
And going to a pragmatic nirvana
Where the welfare of our citizenry is premus inter pares
Where the security of our vulnerable is the collective security of the Amba creed
And where the prosperity and happiness of each and all
Is our daily and lifelong commitment.

We shall overcome
Because we are over achieving the rudimentaries of foundational values
Of no hunger to self, family, friend, stranger and nation
Of blind justice to all in the humility of courtroom

And the encompassing cloak of the law
The very law that we have all made for ourselves.
Yes! We are over achieving when the Press and the Opposition
Have made sure that the President and the Justice and the Speaker
Do not only have their day in Court if need be
But are read the same rules for the same acts of commission or omission.
Yes! O Yes!! We are achieving when the first family
Goes to the same hospital with every family in the land
And where the coffee farmer and the cocoa planter
Are evacuated to the same destinations that our local services cannot carry.

We shall overcome
Because we are understanding our own very selves
Overstating our weaknesses
And overtaking our own very goals.
